Back from the USA

Sorry it's been a bit quiet on here - I've been away, in the deep south of the USA for the last 3 weeks. It's been awesome (but I did miss being able to cook)

We took our time and travelled around a fair bit...

Since we couldn't guarantee fridges in the hotels we stayed we invested a whole $4.99 in a polystyrene ice-box on our 2nd day so we could keep things cool and have a small larder of food, and more importantly cold beer when we reached our destination.

And this gives you an idea of what I ate day by day (Pete mainly ate Catfish & shrimp until we got to Nashville

5th pancakes & bacon - airline Food - crinkle cut fries-  sap (self assembled picnic)
7th beignets - sap - Mexican
11th beignets - burger - seafood @ underground 119
12th make your own waffles - sap - pizza @ stone pony
13th continental breakfast - fried chicken - chicken parmigiana sandwich
14th sap - cheese burger @ Graceland - BBQ ribs
15th banana & strawberry pancakes - chicken parmigiana sandwich - sat fish, caloo & dumplings

20th sausage & eggs - sap - steak & shrimp
21st continental breakfast -bbq pork sandwich - pizza / burrito
22nd waffle - sap - Mexican
23rd breakfast - sap - salad
24th breakfast cereal - mega picnic - spaghetti & meatballs
25th - pancakes & sausage - burger & jacket potato - chicken wings
26th - pancakes & bacon - burger & fries - cheese covered fries - airplane food

Anywhere it says 'sap' - it means Self Assembled Picnic, mainly cheese / tofurky / tomato rolls from our little ice-box. We had picnics outside of the Jack Daniels Distillery, by a stream at Dollywood (where they also give you free iced water at all of the drinks stands) and on a bench outside of Rock City etc - between that and using Yelp for research we did well on finding local things to eat.. (which is why my next post will probably be about dieting)

What we really took away was 2 things, how fierce the pride in local cuisine & ingredients were, and how familiar all the food in supermarkets felt, so much of it now available in the UK.

But since I do love charts here's a general breakdown of what breakfast consisted of each day...

And finally, this gives you an idea of all of the beers we drank that you can't get in the UK:

Good day at the office..

... Had the first of two weekend open days in Feb (there's a bunch of Wednesdays ones too) and it's deep in Interview season. Today consisted of 2 very bouncy talks on our awesome portfolio of awards, a big mac meal wolfed down in a couple of mins and between us we interviewed around 40 students (and some of them were very, very good - next years intake is looking awesome) Not much else, Pete has the Bear & Pheasant tonight so I'm going to put my feet up, watch The Clone Wars DVD that turned up and relax a bit. I'm currently full of chocolate, marshmallows and white citrus tea, having watched the last part of The Art of Russia - making me want to go back to Russia and wishing I'd have been a bit freeier too explore when I was there. One day I'll go back, take Pete, learn to tell the difference between sour cream and mayonnaise and stay away from the cabbage dumplings, especially for breakfast. But it's been a very busy week - got invited down to an awes...
