The Pretty, The Easy and the things on Sticks #1

I've been playing on Pinterest for a little while, since I was aware of it I suppose - a visual version of reddit, mainly American, and judging by some of the names of people that follow my pins, big in Scandinavia.

If you're not familiar with it then it splits into board - which are made up of peoples individual boards that are sorted into these categories - sometimes it slips up - weight loss pins seeping into the geek board but the Food & Drink board is pretty solidly full of pretty, yummy things to eat. That's the first thing you notice is how pretty everything is on there.

There's the instagram effect - everything looks pretty with a faux-vintage digital filter (even us) and the rise of good cameras on mobile phones I'm sure has had something to do with the quality of photos on the boards - even if everything I take a photo off comes out yellow - but so many of the pins focus on pretty little party food - things on sticks (Coming soon, a board entirely for these) - little nibbles, tiny bites - the things cookery magazines have been hawking to us for years, but no one really expected to be able to live up to, and no one really made at home - but it was print media, and everyone knows print media lies.

But this is the internet, and the feeling on pinterest is that these are, normal people - desperate housewives in the states who produce wonderful healthy lunch box snacks for sprawling families as if it's nothing. I know, I've tried to make pretty things, I've succeeded on a few occasions, but I'm also aware that people don't really notice if the food you serve is a little lop sided, or a mini tart has it's guts spilled over. I just wonder if this very glossy view of food will change the way people think about how they make food for their friends, if anyone who has built up confidence in cooking will have it knocked back because they don't have the time, or the skills to make everything look Pinterest pretty...

Man, I'm tierd. I know it's only been my usual weekend at Nero but with such a busy week preceeding it and such a busy day Saturday (stupud Lord Mayor's parade - I've more civic pride then most, but parades annoy me in SimCity where they keep centering on them, they annoy me even more when they drive past work wth loudspeakers blearing). In work again tomorrow - Amazingly the one or two days promised by my boss whern she was away has morphed into 2 solid weeks of work. GRRR - Wish I wasn't so weak willed, and I could say something, but lord knows the money will be helpful. I just keep hoping it won't hurt my project, and I have to be better at making myself work. At least I know more or less what I'm doing with my project. Been on my own this weekend as well, Pete's popped back home to proudly show off his Barista of the Year finalist t-shirt (he came 3rd in the region, lots of calls of Eurovision stylee tactical voting and thewrong shaped jugs - Pete...

Recipe for a perfect day

So today pretty much constitutes a perfect day: Woke up, got some work done, Pete made me coffee, Dave my father in law made breakfast, we set off home fairly early on a beautiful sunny day. On the radio we listened to the Humphrey Littleton memorial concert and decided, using the sat nav to visit Cirencester on the way home. As opposed to actually visiting the town and it's many delis we lay in the sunshine on the grass of the amphitheatre, trying to work out what went where since English Heritage had omitted any information boards. We then went to Waitrose, brought some yummy things for a picnic lunch and dinner, had said picnic overlooking very senic view in Birdlip... ...and decided to go to the cinema. We just made it in time for a showing at the junction 10 showcase, where we hadn't seen a film since I was a student in Staffs. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is an awesome film, in case you were wondering. Then we made it home, spent a bit of time being domestic, aand also fo...

Tofu Recipe Round Up

More for my own benefit then anything else I'm going to round up my favourite go-to weeknight tofu recipes. This is different from my pinterest board which is full of things I haven't necessarily tried yet but look yummy. Vegan Tofu Taco Crumbles Vietnamese Fried Tofu w/ Tomato Sauce – Dau Sot Ca Chua  (I airfry the tofu for this one) I also like to slather it in BBQ sauce and bake it for about 40 mins with peppers and onions before adding it to wraps with some salad. I've also found it's a great substitute for paneer in things - it's not quite there but it's close oh, and if I do need to press it, and I haven't got time (which is almost always) I used the microwave method from this chirpy little video
